Legends about the wind flit and blow around these exposed British Isles: that an arid easterly helped fuel the Great Fire of London, that the weathercocks atop our churches point to the cockerel that crowed when Peter denied knowing Jesus, and that the Scouse accent got its distinctive hoarseness from the gusts blowing down the Mersey Tunnel. Possible, probable, ridiculous. Wind always did take the mickey, turning our mackintoshes into kites, our summer holidays into searches for shelter, and our candlelit dinners into cruel comedies.
A HIGH number of callouts on a Cumbrian fell is a source of concern for a rescue team. For Penrith Mountain Rescue Team, a spate of five rescues on Cross Fell means that this North Pennine peak is fast becoming the team’s primary area for callouts. Penrith MRT leader Rob Holden said: Cross Fell is Cumbria’s eighth highest fell at 893 metres. Which makes it one metre taller than Pillar, with its own hazards and dangers. But people tend to underestimate its dangers as it is not in the Lake District National Park. With our Team patch extending from the fells around Shap and Haweswater right up to the Scottish border, seeing so many callouts to one mountain has been ringing alarm bells in recent months.
