The Winners Of The 2021 Audubon Photography Awards Are Breathtaking

The Winners Of The 2021 Audubon Photography Awards Are Breathtaking · Jul 8, 2021 @21:50 PM After months of quarantining inside many North Americans have taken up bird-watching as a hobby and the birds outside have continued to go on their merry way, unaware of a global pandemic afflicting humans. Many of these birders have been lucky to take some eye-popping photographs of our feathered friends. In that spirit, the winners of the National Audubon Society s 2021 Audubon Photography Awards were announced this week, and they re a testament to the extraordinary beauty of nature. After sifting through 8,770 images and 261 videos taken by 2,416 photographers representing all 50 states, Washington D.C. and 10 Canadian provinces and territories, the National Audubon Society announced eight different prizes across five divisions. Here are some of our favorites, with stories behind the shot, courtesy of Audubon.org.

Wild About Utah: Acorn Woodpecker

Sound credit: Kevin Colver My first encounter with an acorn woodpecker occurred many years ago in California, a species unknown to me. I was surprised to find a small flock of these comedic-looking birds most unusual for woodpeckers, which are generally solitary other than with mates or young. And those startling yellow eyes!  On a recent West Rim trek in Zion National Park., to my delight, I got a second encounter near Potato Hollow. Their loud, sharp calls first alerted me. I paused to find the source and was startled to see who it was, unaware they existed in our state.

The data is the Johns Hopkins CSSE data. Here is the site. A slight decrease in slope, 15 days after Thanksgiving. I feel I’m engaging in a macabre form of tape-watching, because I don’t think the peak is coming in the next days, or even weeks. I thought I’d look at some big states (New York, Florida, Texas, California) instead of the Midwest: Texas and Florida diverge, but California sprints ahead.
