Acomb postmaster retires after 33 years service

Paul Baker was praised for his ‘marvellous’ service after stepping down from the role. Acomb Parish Council vice-chairman, Charles Enderby made a presentation to Paul on behalf of the community on April 21, wishing him well for his retirement and thanking him for his service. He also received thank you cards and messages from the children at Little Oaks Nursery and Acomb First School. Unfortunately, current coronavirus restrictions on meeting others prevented a large turnout. Paul said he had thoroughly enjoyed being the village’s postmaster. On his plans for his retirement, he said he had a lot of work to do on his property.

Acomb post office to temporarily close

Acomb postmaster Paul Baker is retiring after 33 years of service. The branch will be closing temporarily at 1pm. The postmaster from Stocksfield Post Office will be offering a mobile service from Acomb Village Hall carpark until there is a permanent solution. The mobile service will begin on Tuesday, April 27 and is scheduled to stop at the Village Hall on Tuesdays and Fridays between 9.40am-10.40am. Alternative Post Office branches in the area are Corbridge Post Office, on Princes Street, and Hexham Post Office, on Battle Hill. Norman Robson, Chair of Acomb Parish Council, said an independent group has been set up within the community, with the support of the Parish Council, to assist the Post Office in finding a new postmaster.

Hexhamshire Ruth Marlee Hello! Firstly, a big “thank you!” to Lynda White for writing the Courant Hexhamshire notes for as long as I can remember! Secondly, so that I can take over her task, I have set up an email account hexhamshirenotes@gmail.com and would welcome any contributions about local events or issues up to Friday evening the week before publication. Please understand that all items may be subject to editing as the total contribution is only 250 words! I edited the Hexhamshire Magazine for 10 years, so hopefully will manage this next challenge. On the subject of the ‘Shire Mag’, the March issue was a cracking production full of local interest and inspiration, all produced and circulated voluntarily. By the way, the annual subscriptions and advertising fees are due! (Please contact hexhamshiremagazine@gmail.com for advice on how to renew).
