said, oregon could not say to parents you have to send your children to public school. oregon passed a law you lawing parochial schools. court said you can t do that. there is a zone that parents have of control over their lives. in nebraska, ban the teaching of german. they said you can t do that because that s up to privacy. this abortion only comes out of all those cases, about contraception, about same sex relations. georgia had a law that criminalized sodomy and the court said that violates the right to privacy. alito is saying here, no, no, no, those decisions aren t affected, but he can t control that. once you eviscerate the right to privacy, he can t control and no one can control where it might end. thank you very much for that. brianna? joining us now, cnn political
expect in two months, what recourse do you as a u.s. senator have? well, my background is in community organizing and we ll have to organize to win elections in order to get a majority in the united states senate so we can codify roe v. wade and we re going to have to organize at the state level as well to do everything we can to protect these rights. i am not naive, though, this is going to be a long, difficult fight. but we have to be able to at the end, i believe we will persevere, but it is going to be a long, long difficult fight. and we have to overturn the filibuster in the senate, so we can actually protect people s rights with the simple majority, which only seems right also. let me ask, though, if the republicans retake control of the senate and the house and were to win the white house in 2024, the filibuster went away, they could theoretically pass the federal ban on abortion and no filibuster, you have no recourse then, correct? well, consider this, they are so drama
laws or constitutional amendments in place to ban or limit access to the procedure effective immediately if roe is overturned. and right now, the democratic controlled congress does not have the votes to do anything about it. so instead, democrats plan to take the issue directly to voters ahead of the 2022 election. joining me now from capitol hill is nbc news national political reporter sahil kapur. sahil, what i hear from democrats and republicans is that elections have consequences and this is a consequence of a number of elections over time setting up very conservative justices. and this is a direct consequence of electing donald trump in 2016. how do they plan on mobilizing democrats and are they sure they can mobilize democrats enough if abortion isn t rolled back entirely and only left to like a 15-week minimum?
fear, anger, and outrage, particularly targeted to different things. first, that texas law, i ve heard from a lot of people this morning that they re really worried that texas will just be the first of many states to enact the sort of ban on abortion. it it s just going to continue to spread across the country. second, that supreme court is going to hear early in december, there s a lot of fear that the new justices on the court are going to rule to overturn roe v. wade. i really can t underscore the amount of anger and fear and outrage that we ve heard from people this morning. listen to what one person had to say about why they decided to come down here today. i don t want any woman in america to have to think about going back to the days where women died due to back alley abortions. it s better to keep them safe. abortion isn t going to go away if we overturn roe, and young women and women across america deserve to have access to health care and abortion is health
cnn s court an lit and olivia knox and seung yun kim. he wanted to warn everyone that the right to abortion isn t mentioned in constitution as far as he s concerned, even though the supreme court in 1973 said indeed the right is there. at the same time, john, ruth bader ginsburg wrote separately to fire her own warning shot to say that even thought the supreme court rejected the law you mentioned about, you know, deciding on abortion race, sex, disability, it did allow part of that law to take effect involving fetal remains, and justice ginsburg writing only for her investment you know, we re all reading the signs here of who is with whom.
