Born in Newport on September 8, 1881, he finished in 73rd place in the all round competition at the Vélodrome Municipal de Vincennes. That made him the third of the British gymnasts in a field of 135 competitors, all of who took part in 16 events. But more significantly, his performances on July 29-30, 1900, make him the first Welsh athlete to take part in the Olympic Games. Aberaman-born cyclist Tom Linton also took part in Paris in 1900, but he rode in three professional events in September for which official medals were not awarded. Previously it was understood the honour of being the first Welshman to take part in the Olympic Games was held by Paulo Radmilovic at the 1906 Intercalated Games in Athens.

As a Liverpool FC youngster, it looked like Layton Maxwell was living the dream - but now he finds himself facing jail over his role in a multi-million pound cocaine gang. The former Reds player was handed his debut by Gerard Houllier back in 1999 - but it would prove to be his only appearance for the club in a career that ended 10 years later at Barry Town.
