MIRPUR: Violence marred the 11th election of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly on Sunday, in which two political workers were killed amid sporadic reports of clashes between rival activists and the familiar refrain of “irregularities” from parties.
The killings took place in Kotli. Two others who were injured are being treated at a hospital, police said.
AJK Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Abdul Rashid Sulehria vowed action against the perpetrators. “An unfortunate incident took place in Kotli. Action will be taken against whoever is involved,” said Sulehria.
He added that “one or two such incidents take place during polls”. About 12 incidents of disputes arising were reported so far, Geo News reported. Clashes among party workers took place in Bagh, which paused polling temporarily, while a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz election camp in Gujranwala was reportedly dismantled
