Lancaster woman awarded $6.4M medical malpractice verdict

A Lancaster County Court jury on Wednesday awarded a Lancaster woman $6.4 million after concluding that she lostÂ her ability to walk unassisted and pain-free becauseÂ her local neurologist initially failed to spot her congenital brain defect. Elizabeth Brubaker, 34, who had been working as a hairdresser and attending HACC to become a radiologic technologist, filed the suit in 2017 againstÂ Dr. Venkatachalam MangeshkumarÂ of Neurology & Stroke Associates, Lititz, which he founded.Â The verdict is one of the largest medical malpractice awards ever here. The juryâs award consists of $6.0 million for pain and suffering and future medical expenses plus $413,000 for past medical expenses, said Brubakerâs attorney, April Strang-Kutay.Â

A Lancaster County Court hearing Zoom-bombing last week is believed to have come primarily from people outside the United States, according to court officials. During the pandemic, courts in Lincoln have turned to online hearings to keep from crowding courtrooms. And it had largely been without hiccups, until last week.Â County Court Judge Holly Parsley described what happened Wednesday as a perfect storm. Â On a busy morningÂ of probate hearings and show cause hearings, she heard something on the Zoom meeting that didn t sound like one of the parties, looked over and saw pornography, which was being shown on all of the courtroom monitors and to all the attorneys and parties present on Zoom, including a 12-year-old who was subject of a guardianship.
