11 aircraft, 5 ships from all these different countries. yet even with state of the art technology, this remains a huge task. if you look at the map, you can see why. look at the distance from perth to where the latest debris was spotted. that s almost 1600 miles. the overall southern search area continues to be about 621,000 square miles. that means that on a good day, what they ve been able to search out here is only about 5%. so it would take them 20 days, if everything goes right, to search this entire sector. that s a huge job. let s narrow it down to just that area, which we re told is about 12 1/2 miles by 12 1/2 miles or around the size of denver, colorado. if you were taking off from washington, d.c. with a search

indian ocean with aircraft and ships looking for any signs of the objects spotted. those 122 objects we talked about. but no objects have been found. the search area is more than 600,000 square miles and even getting to that part of the ocean is a challenge. tom forman joins me now with details. reporter: they have assembled quite a fleet to look for this missing plane. 11 aircraft, 5 ships from all these different countries. yet even with state of the art technology, this remains a huge task. if you look at the map, you can see why. look at the distance from perth to where the latest debris was spotted. that s almost 1600 miles. the overall southern search area continues to be about 621,000 square miles. that means that on a good day, what they ve been able to search out here is only about 5%.

our breaking news tonight. the search is back on for flight 370. and wit everyone hopes only answers. complicating the effort determining how far that plane flew after running out of few. tom forman shows us how investigators have been doing that. reporter: in terms of a primary search area, we re no longer talking about millions of square miles, but about 621,000 square miles. how do you break down something that big, even with a lot of assets? this is how it s done. imagine our plane coming in here over this search area in the indian ocean, and this is what they essentially do, they will impose a grid on the ocean. but all of the squares of this searchable area are not equal in value. for example, in this case, you might say the most likely place is the middle, because that s simply where all the averages come together. that s where you have chosen this square.

cover. it is a huge area, jim. you re absolutely right. that s why these pike churs are so exciting to them because these pictures are a solid lead that help them cut down that space because frankly this looks like an airplane debris field. to prove whether it is or not, but it looks like the right thing. when i talk about cutting down the space, what we mean is when you re searching a big area like this, 621,000 square mile, you essentially impose a grid upon it. and not every square in that grid is equal. some of them are given a higher value than others based on whether or not you think the plane would go down there because there s some evidence to support that. for example, if you thought from all of this satellite data and everything else that it ran out of fuel earlier and did not glide at all, you might push it way up here toward the northern end. what we have here is the opposite, though. a suggestion that maybe it either ran out of fuel later or it went into a 200-mile glide
