State Road 44 construction upgrade starts Monday

Courtesy-INDOT JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) begins maintenance this week on a $6 million asphalt resurfacing and roadway reconstruction project along State Road 44 in Johnson and Shelby Counties. The contract also includes bridge work at Sugar Creek Overflow, east of I-65. Starting today, Monday, April 5, through the end of May, expect lane closures with flagging, from east of Sugar Creek Overflow to State Road 9 in Shelbyville. Beginning Wednesday, April 14, INDOT says lanes will be closed through early September, from east of State Road 44 and the I-65 interchange to Sugar Creek Overflow. On April 17, traffic will be restricted to a single lane in each direction at S.R. 44 and the I-65 interchange in Franklin for road reconstruction. In mid-June, the S.R. 44 bridge over Sugar Creek Overflow will be closed for 60 days for superstructure replacement.

April s last Third House Session focuses on education

Most queries were about education. With regard to an income threshold on school vouchers, Walker said, that while he’s a strong proponent of choice who homeschooled four children, he sees the law of diminishing returns at work such that making funds available to a wider swath of families does not “necessarily create better outcomes.” With regard to the possibility of fraud in the Education Savings Account program, Lauer said vetting the treasurer’s office prevents that as an issue, saying, “Facts about ESAs in other states don’t bear that out.”

Early morning fire damages apartment

Courtesy of CFD COLUMBUS, Ind. – A quick fire attack by firefighters prevented fire spread at Pence Place Apartments Monday morning. Around 5:09 a.m., Columbus Firefighters responded to 543 Pence Avenue for a report of an apartment fire. Columbus Firefighters arrived on the scene and found heavy fire pushing out of a second floor bedroom window. As crews prepared to combat the fire, neighbors advised that the apartment’s occupants were out of town for Easter. Firefighters directed a water stream through the upstairs window and knocked down the flames before moving to the interior of the apartment.  Once inside the apartment firefighters found the ground level free of smoke and flames. Firefighter then moved up to the second floor where they encounter high heat and smoke as they made their way to the bedroom. Firefighters extinguished the remaining hot spots and reported the fire under control.
