India s telecom tariffs are among the lowest in the world as a percentage of per capita gross national income (GNIpc), with telcos having the potential to raise prices by at least 1.5x over the next 4-5 years. India s tariffs are the second lowest among countries with a GNIpc of less than $10,000, after Brazil s 0.92%. Analysts predict sharp tariff hikes by telcos like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea in 2024, as they are preparing to roll out their 5G services.
Vodafone Ideas recently announced Q3FY23 earnings paint a sorry picture. Losses run into thousands of crores amid tough competition from market leaders Airtel and Jio. Amid all this, lack of 5G services could lead to further churn for Vodafone Idea. The company says it is in talks for more funds from lenders. Can it come out of the storm?
Bharti Airtel s quarterly AGR, or revenue from licensed services, increased 4.08% sequentially to 19,256 crore in the April-June period, while Jio and Vi s increased 2.05% and 0.8% to 23,457.11 crore and 7,267.76 crore, respectively, Trai data showed.
