job growth, right, the president saying we re going to be creating jobs and the vice-president saying we re out there to create jobs and what we re hoping for and now the vice-president yesterday saying this yesterday when he was out there in wisconsin, we inherited a god awful mess, no way to regenerate 3 trillion dollars that was lost. we ve lost 8 million jobs according to him doesn t look like they re coming back. i thought we were supposed to be creating jobs with this. that was the spending plan, limit unemployment to 8%, it didn t, it went to 10% and still near 10%. if you want to get 8 1/2 million jobs back, you ve got to create at least a quarter million jobs every month to get all of those jobs back by 2012, 2013. we re nowhere near that place. all of this financial reform and now it moves into the phase of regulation, you have some sort of agreement moving forward on financial reform in congress, but now, it sounds as if all of
you democrat and republican very powerful people in the finance world together? did that signal that republicans and democrats are going to pass something here? i think it could go either way today, more likely than not they could get something done. once you get to this step in the process, you tend to be able to get something across the finish line but i don t know for sure because there s a lot of angst on the democratic side and they ve had a very good push back on policy. it doesn t mean they don t think there should be wall street reform. everybody knows that but they re interested on the merits. senator dodd right here talking about how it s been so long and we ve been and they ve done so little to straighten out wall street from that crash ever happening again. let s listen. we ve lost almost $11 trillion in household wealth in the last 17 or 18 months. seven million homes in foreclosure. 8 1/2 million jobs have been lost. retirement incomes have declined by 20%. housin
trillion of household wealth in the last 17 or 18 months. 7 million homes in foreclosure. 8 1/2 million jobs have been lost. retirement incomes have declined by 20%. housing values declined by 30%. this morning s news obviously about goldman-sachs. here we are 17 months after someone broke into our house, in effect, and robbed us and we still haven t even changed the locks on the doors and we need to get it done. interesting thing is you have senator shelby sitting next to senator dodd, many people are saying that would not have happened, the republican and democrat would not have come together on a national television show unless they felt that this financial reform bill was moving forward with some republican support. in the meantime, you have senator bob corker, republican from tennessee says hold on a minute. may want to introduce an amendment and here s what bob corker wants to do. he wants to force executives and board members to return their compensation if their institution f
this whole meltdown, this indiscriminate lending of money to buy homes for people who could never pay it back, the pressures of the reinvestment act to lend these loans to people that were never going to be able to make their mortgage payments. the white house believes the republicans traditional close ties with big banks and big business and the bush administration s role in the bailout put them on the wrong side of this debate and tim geithner says the president is determined that wall street won t take down the economy again. you got 8 1/2 million americans lose their jobs and their house, tens of thousands of businesses fail, worse financial crisis in generations, that is a powerful case for reform and again, that s why i m so confident we ll see americans come together. democrats think the fraud charges against goldman sachs will help them make the case for financial regulatory reform. senate republican liter mitch mcconnell say whatever emerges
