the ground. now to my right is going north. the train had just recently left 30th street station in philadelphia. take a look behind me. this is the scene about a block away from where we are. to the left you would have found the lead car, the engine car, which was about, at least almost about 50 feet north of the other cars that with completely turned off. the pictures you ve seen in the aerials, the car that looks like it s completely mangled. the other cars just flipped over on their side. the one car that s perpendicular to the tracks complete devastation. five fatalities. six critical. we talked about 243 people on the train. the mayor spoke to us about an hour ago. he says we still can t be sure that everyone is accounted for. we saw a search dog go into the scene about an hour ago. they have, a lot of the emergency workers have left the
the breeze as he walked. he appeared to be somewhat distraught somewhat dishelved. we saw a woman being escorted. who also appeared to be somewhat shane up being escorted by a couple of police officers, also may have been a passenger, but not abundantly clear. i don t know if you re familiar with this part of the city, the shot we re looking at right now from sky fox, it looks like an old factory there. are there homes or residences around this particular area that you know of? this immediate area appears to be mostly industrial. at least formerly industrial. let s put it that way, not as much residential in this immediate area. i can tell you as you come in on this amtrak run, the northeast corridor from new york. much of what you see as you come into 30th street station is industrial and post industrial areas of the city into this
recorder that s expected to shed more light on why that train derailed. ntsb investigators are still combing through the wreckage for clues and the company is cooperating fully with its investigation. amtrak will do everything in its power to assist in the investigation and brought every resource to support that effort. this is the amtrak family. we are very saddened by what s occurred and will do everything in our power to work with the mayor s office ntsb and all authorities to do everything possible in dealing with this tragedy. the train was heading to new york from washington, d.c. when it derailed. it just left its scheduled 9:07 p.m. stop at philadelphia s 30th street station. when about 9:28 p.m. the train derailed with such force it ripped the steel rails right from the tracks, tearing down overhead electric wires. all seven cars derailed many rolled over. if you see the video there, absolutely mangled, in pieces
in north carolina amtrak derailed in 2015 as well. 55 injured. earlier this month amtrak hit a truck in louisiana, one dead. and two injured as well. the deadliest that amtrak ever experienced was september 22, 1993 there was a crash in mobile alabama. 47 people lost their lives. the number with this crash as we know of is five. look at the location of this actually. it s a similar junction right here. this is 71 years ago. 79 people died. 117 injured in that moment. right. and back 73 years ago in 1943 at that particular it was also an electric train that bobbed and weaved it was going 65 miles per hour and derailed. you can see the actually crash site as we look at the google images. the train had just left the 30th
reporter: hi, betty, yeah. i was on the train that left the, the amtrak train northbound that left washington, d.c. around 9:00. so we were on our train when news reports started coming in about this other train derailment outside philadelphia. we didn t hear any updates from the couldn t ductor until we were stopped in wilmington. at that point we were told that the train service would terminate at the 30th street station in philadelphia. we were given the opportunity to get off in wilmington or we could continue on to 30th street station in philadelphia. that s where the rest of the passengers got off the train. it was a pretty hectic scene here a couple hours ago when we first got off the train. it was already 11:15 at that point. there weren t that. amtrak workers working so they
