flames. highway patrol investigators say the van failed to stop for railroad signals. the passenger train was traveling at normal speed when the two collided. nobody on board was injured. investigators looking into that deadly amtrak crash last month in philadelphia ruled out one possible cause of the accident, and it has to do with the engineer. abc s karen travers with the latest. reporter: new clues about the derailment of amtrak train 188. the ntsb said engineer brandon bostian was not using his cell phone to text talk or download data while operating the train, but that doesn t answer every question. there are 400,000 pieces of data involved in the analysis. and because of the extent of that things like use of an app or other use of the phone has not been determined. reporter: train 188 was traveling at more than twice the speed limit, more than 100 miles an hour, when it hit a curve in north philadelphia and derailed on may 12th.
eight people were killed and more than 200 were seriously injured, including the engineer. now the federal government is calling for nationwide changes for passenger trains including warning signs where speed limits drop more than 20 miles per hour. if the train doesn t have automatic braking technology, requiring the crew member to stay in contact with the engineer through danger rourks high-speed areas. and if the trains do have that technology they must be checked and calibrated for speed. another key development will be installation of speed control technology throughout the busy northeast corridor. amtrak s pledge to have that in place by the end of this year. federal investigators have said there were no mechanical problems with train 188 and there were no issues with the track. so they re still looking into what exactly caused that derailment. brandi, t.j.? okay, karen. thank you. powerful storms are battering florida s east coast. near port saint lucie, drivers made their w
