ago. the shooter is still a free man. the family said it was murder. that and more right here, right now on cnn. good evening. i m don lemon and thank you for joining us. we are going to begin with a developing story that is a turning point for the u.s.-led mission in afghanistan and could starlt bringing the men and women there home much sooner than we thought. in a matter of weeks or days. the tragic story of army staff sergeant robert bales played out last weekend, but tonight he is on u.s. soil. his attorney arrived in kansas to prepare for his first face-to-face meetings with his client. he is suspected of killing 16 afghan civilians including nine children last weekend. he could be charged in connection with the deaths as soon as this week. standing by for us, dan, let s start with bales attorney. this story has been advancing over the weekend. for several days we had no idea of the name of the suspect while the military kept his name secret. now we know who he is.

polls. economic conditions vary greatly from state to state. let s take a look at a few. vermont s unemployment rate is at 5.1%. that is much lower than the 8.3% national average. in january, only one in about 21,000 homes in vermont were in the foreclosure process. a very different picture in ohio. unemployment much higher there, 8.1%, though lower than the national average. 1 in 616 homes is in foreclosure in ohio. in georgia, it s seen some of the worst numbers. unemployment there, 9.7%. higher than the national average. 1 in 328 homes are in the foreclosure process in georgia. cnn s chief national correspondent john king joins us now. as if john king needs an introduction to anybody who watches tv. john, as we just pointed out, we just pointed out three states. every state has a different economy. so what economic issues are going to be the most important both in super tuesday and in the election? ali, you make a very critical point going state by state because we often

juvenile court. that is happening this afternoon. ohio s attorney general says he thinks it is likely that the suspect is going to be tried as an adult. a lawyer for his family says the young man is distraught, remorseful. but a student who was grazed by a bullet says the shooter didn t look like that way during the attack. his face was expressionless. it looked like he was on a mission and he knew that he was about to do it. we re going to go straight to a police news press conference happening in ohio. let s bring that to you live. it is starting right now. it s just touched a lot of people. a lot of families. i happen to be a graduate of chardon high school. i met my wife here. most eerie feeling in the world was walking down the halls yesterday, running down them in response to the incident we had. the law enforcement were well prepared, well planned, and executed. they carried out the plan. now we move to another important phase. and while the investigation continu

able to help others through organ donation. in just about 2 1/2 hours, the high school sophomore accused of shooting five fellow students, three of whom have now died, is due to appear in juvenile court. the state s attorney general says that it is likely that 17-year-old tj lane will be tried as an adult. people who knew him said that lane was a guarded boy, from a troubled family. for more on that and the victims and the fallout from yesterday s terrible attack, i want to bring in my colleague, ted rowlands, who is live from chardon. this young boy is in a lot of trouble, likely adult trouble. and now with a third death in this case, i m hearing that the sheriff is saying, we re moving to another phase. what exactly does the sheriff mean by that? well, clearly, we re talking about a triple homicide and this is a premeditated homicide, actually, and to say that he s in a lot of trouble is an understatement. and yes, he is a juvenile at this point, but we have seen in case

demeet truce newlen. we re learning much more about him today. he attended the lake academy alternative school, a school dedicated to serving at risk students. his facebook page on december 30th concluded with a post that said this. die, all of you. one witness to the shooting says that lane s face was basically expressionless when he opened fire and all the horror, of course, was caught on the emergency dispatch. attention, chardon rescue. we have an active shooter at the high school. active gunshots at the high school. chardon, we have three students down in the cafeteria at this time. we still don t know where the shooter is. also, there is a fourth one down in room 200. t.j. lane would ultimately be chased from the school by a teacher. and then arrested less than half a mile away near his own car. all of this unfolding in a small town, roughly 30 miles east of cleveland. at chardon high school, classes were canceled today. the flags will be lowered across the state. l
