this has in lahaina, 80 miles west of here from where we are. i want to go over the numbers that we have out this morning. because now, we know at least a total of 2,207 structures were damaged or destroyed in the fire. more than 2,000 acres have been burned. and 86% of the structures that were exposed to fire are classified as residential buildings. so you can just imagine the loss. we have heard from witness accounts, and residents who have told us they were only able to get out with the clothes on their back. so we are talking about property loss. loss of businesses. loss of people s livelihoods. and now, lahaina is going to take a long time to recover, and it will likely cost billions of dollars. fema has put out a preliminary assessment, estimating the recovery to cost at least 5.5
we have new video that came in from the national guard, and you can see dozens and dozens of troops, going through the wreckage of what is left, and we have noticed in some of the flames that troops have started to spray paint xs on what is left of, you know, concrete, wooden structures, to mark that the interiors of buildings have been searched. but you know, fredricka, as we started the broadcast a couple of minutes ago, you noticed the latest figures that we have from the pacific disaster center and from fema, the first real projected total of what it could cost to rebuild lahaina, and the surrounding areas, 5.5billion dollars, 2,207 structures damaged or destroyed. 4,500 people is the potential number of citizens here across maui who will need to be sheltered. i would say, you know, it is certainly fair to characterize the mood here, as one of extreme

afternoon. you ve been here since 3:00? none of us has moved. my co-worker is up there three trucks. they ve been here the whole time. it s either laughter or tears. when i talk to all the people in our business that have been affected, about 14 people that lost their houses and so we re just trying to do the most good we can. it s really frustrating when you can t. so in terms of the wider picture, there are new figures that are out from fema estimating that it s going to cost $5.52 billion to rebuild lahaina, 2,207 structures either damaged or destroyed. 4,500 people, that is the estimate for the number of people who need to be sheltered in both the near and the long-term. but this, what we are seeing here, is the first chapter to both rebuilding, seeing what survived, and seeing what is left of a place that was so
