At the U.S. Army Garrison Pōhakuloa Training Area on the Big island, scientists recently conducted two diverse projects: one about the Hawaiian bud moth and one about the 2022 Mauna Loa eruption.
The recent 2022 Mauna Loa eruption began just before midnight, at 11:21 p.m. on Nov. 27. The first caldera floor fissures were visible in webcams; however, the activity propagated south, outside of the view of the webcams, in the initial hours of activity.
Astronomers are already considering removing valuable assets to protect them from the eruption. One of the observatories under the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) is closed.
