going to hit back. i can expect benghazi will be brought up to counter what you said, governor. sure. the republicans will hit back in so many different ways, but hillary clinton has successes. i mean, henry kissing said, and henry kissinger, last time i check, he said that hillary clinton ran the best state department he has seen in his lifetime. that s henry kissinger. beth, as we look at these two ads and see where hillary clinton has come as a candidate, do you see her playing this race differently? and is it more effective in any way? a little bit. the 2008 ad was specifically targeted against now president obama suggesting that then senator obama did not have the national security credentials or experience to handle a dangerous world. the new ad you played is much more geared towards bernie sanders. she doesn t talk about him much on the campaign trail, but she s going right at his message about economic inequality and economic insecurity. she s saying, she acknowledges
ready to lead in a dangerous world. it s 3:00 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep. who do you want answering the phone? joining me now for pennsylvania governor and former dnc chairman, ed rendell and beth fooey, senior editor at msnbc.com. good to have both of you with us. governor, i ll start with you. what do you think hillary clinton has learned, based on those two ads, as a candidate, since 2008? well, actually, i thought the 2008 ad was very effective as well. it made the point, do you want an experienced leader? and no one, i don t think anybody in the field, republican or democrat, has the experience with the military and with foreign leader es that hillary clinton has. i think she s got sound judgment, she s strong when she has to be strong, she knows when to negotiate. i think her experience sun rivalled and she s smart to keep pushing that in every way she can. you know republicans are
all humanity, you mention what happens to the children. particularly, the young women. and we are he has nudging in his proposal to repeal that 2008 ad because we should be sending those kids home. and the way it s going to stop is when families see plainly loads of the kids arriving back in the country. absolutely. and the money is wasted. you can stop that tomorrow if the national guard goes down to the border, we ve been saying that for years here. but it s, there is a figure. go ahead can i interrupt? yes. the guard is important but you ve got to repeal law called traffic victim act. it s noernl way to do that. there are discussions that should have been his first priority. if you want to stop the bleeding that is the way to do it. should have been the first priority. it s not mentioned in his proposal for all of the legislation of $3.7 billion.
effective. i do think the 2008 ad was a hit, which was a hit on obama that he had no experience at that time. there s no longer an operative argument, and it didn t work so well then either. but this question is twofold. who s out of touch, who s in touch, in a time of great economic distress? and, you know, being culturally connected as the president is, the bottom line is results. mitt romney and anybody supporting mitt romney is going to say 25 different ways that you aren t better off than you were four years ago. it makes sense. eugene robinson, do you agree? i do agree. and i think i actually you know, donny, i think, analyzed that ad perfectly. i do think that the if it s going to be a competition on who is more out of touch, i m not sure i want to get into that knife fight on those terms, if i m mitt romney. hold on. while you were talking about who s out of touch, we just had
the primary. santorum claims he s the conservative alternative to mitt romney. michigan is key to president obama s re-election chances. today, he addressed the united auto workers convention in washington taking two swipes at romney s 2008 ad, including this. the other option was to do absolutely nothing, and let these companies fail. you will recall there were some politicians who said we should do that. some even said we should let detroit go bankrupt. romney and santorum opposed the auto industry bailout. what does your gut tell you? who do you think that a better chance of defeating president obama in michigan? go to facebook.com/newsnation.
