the decisions being made. it is hard wrenching because cancer survivors more than anyone really need the follow-up care. this study looked at folks who had cancer and got care while they were cancer presumably but aren t getting the follow-up care. they found that 17.6% of the cancer survivors in this study were not getting the care they needed. we re talking about not getting prescription drugs they should have. sometimes it was dental care. other times it was mental health care but 17.6% not getting what they needed. age, how does that play into this? age played a huge role. older people can likely to get care, and one reason for that, one word, medicare. folks over the age of 65 by definition have insurance, they have medicare, so they could get the care they needed but we all know that many people under the age of 65 are uninsured so not all of them were able to afford the care they needed.
here is our senior correspondent elizabeth cohen. good morning, elizabeth. reporter: good morning, don and karen. this is so unfortunate, the folks who need care the most, those who managed to survive cancer are not always getting the care they need. according to the new study, take a look at this number. 17.6% of the folks who are cancer survivors studied are not getting the care they need. they are not getting the prescription drugs they need, sometimes it is dental care, sometimes it is mental health care. as you said, it is usually because of money they just can t always seem to afford it. when you take a look at who is most likely to do this, to skip follow-up treatments and skip routine medical care, does age matter and whether or not they are insured? age and insurance absolutely matter. those under the age of 65 are more likely to forego care because people over the age of 65 are insured by medicare. insured folks more likely to get
