first day fund-raising bragging right, bernie sanders 2020 feels a lot like bernie sanders 2016. his new campaign announced today that they raised nearly $6 million in the first 24 hours since he launched, and it wasn t, you know, a few tens of thousands of donors this time. it wasn t 35,000 supporters giving that money. it was 223,000 donors giving that money. now a couple of things that are interesting about that enormous first day fund-raising number. number one, it implies that some things are carrying over from his 2016 race. he built a huge base there. they re still responding to him. also, the average donation size in this first fund-raising haul is the exact same size of the donation to bernie sanders in the 2016 cycle. people were giving an average of 27 bucks in 2016. yesterday they gave an average of 27 bucks. that means he can go back to them again and again and again and again. but also, in announcing the qualifying rules to debate in
apart? here to weigh in, basil smikle former executive director of the new york state democratic party and my friend republican strategist and author of branding america. i have to say this first. $4 million for bernie sanders, $1.5 million for kamala harris for the 2020 election. imagine if that $5.5 million or the total raised so far all the potential candidates and president trump s 2020 re-election, imagine if that money went to our public school system. wouldn t that be glorious? okeydoke. the average donation was only 27 bucks. does the first day of fund-raising speak to the excitement that s still around for sanders or listen, he already had the framework in place and knew he was running and all he had to do was hit go. i think the latter. the framework and infrastructure was already there. i don t think there s excitement
because of what happened in 2016. half hearted endorsement of hillary after the primary, this half hearted attempt to bring democrats together after that. the consistency of him lobbying sort of bombs against the democratic party, not so much the establishment, the party at large. it s an impressive number. no question about it. but i just don t see the lane for him in 2020. i think democrats are still upset at him. 27 bucks. you don t blow your nose for $27. what? anyway, you know what. she s like do you know what i do. i don t even get that. i think that $27 tells me that it s a movement. this is momentum because that s somebody, $27, $30, $50, that s somebody that probably doesn t have a lot of money but they believe in the cause. you ve got to remember that bernie sanders is the original guy that started all this progressive movement. you don t think that s

it s not just young people. it is working class people, it is middle class people, who are sick and tired of status quo politics, that s true in iowa, true in new hampshire, true all over this country. you don t think you re going to be a problem for house democrats who don t want to run on raising taxes? no. i think, in fact, hillary clinton will be the problem because i think our campaign is the campaign that s generating excitement and energy that will result in a high voter turnout. republicans win when voter turnout is low. democrats win when voter turnout is high. i think our campaign is raising the issue about a rigged economy, a corrupt campaign finance system. second clinton yesterday, just announced i suppose with pride, her super pac brought in $45 million. i don t have a super pac. our average contribution is 27 bucks. joining me now, former congressman and hillary clinton supporter, barney frank.
