Willacy County holds first COVID-19 vaccine clinic using unique method

Willacy County, with the help of the Department of State Health Services Region 11 Office, hosted its first vaccine clinic on Friday, issuing a total of 780 vaccines. The vaccinations that we got will only cover about 3 percent of the population in Willacy County, said Willacy County Emergency Management Coordinator Frank Torres. That s not very much, but that s 3 percent that we got taken care of and we re working on the other 97 percent.
The county went a different route with vaccine registration, issuing vouchers to all local physicians in Willacy County. Local physicians then distributed the vouchers to community members, who completed the forms and brought them to the EMS Office where people were given a time to show up to Raymondville High School on Friday.

Friday s vaccination event at the Raymondville High School was said to be a success as residents received their first dose of the Moderna vaccine.
Officials say by 5 p.m. a total of 780 people are expected to be vaccinated.
DSHS and Willacy County announced a unique registration plan Thursday, where local physician distributed vaccine vouchers to community members who then took their completed forms to the EMS office where they were given a time slot to show up.
Willacy County s first COVID-19 vaccine clinic is happening Friday at Raymondville High School.
Starting at 9 a.m., 780 vaccines will be administered. Pre-registration is now underway for eligible Tier 1A and Tier 1B groups.
Eligible residents must pick up a voucher at any doctor s office in Willacy County, fill it out, and bring it to the EMS station located at 693 S. 7th Street in Raymondville, according to Willacy County Emergency Management Coordinator Frank Torres. What we ve done is we ve issued vouchers to all our local physicians and the people can swing by, pick one up at the doctors office, fill it out and then come by the EMS station, Torres said.
