The North East Wales Archives team has been digging into the history of a Unicorn Pub in Ruthin

April 9 marks a day to celebrate what is perhaps the most popular mythical creature ever. As such, the North East Wales Archives - which cover Denbighshire and Flintshire - have gone back through their records to take a look at any Unicorn-related content they could find from down the years. The unicorn, essentially a horse with a horn on its head, is a symbol of happiness, fantasy, and and magic. The North East Wales Archives team discovered that there once was a pub/brewery called The Unicorn in Ruthin. It was believed to have been trading in the early 1800 s and went on to become a butcher s shop and is now a private residence.

North East Wales Archives worked with Theatr Clwyd to create monologues which tell tales of the women. Archivist Sarah Roberts hoped the films showed what can lie in the archives and highlight stories of ordinary women. They are part of Women Rediscovered, a project designed to encourage people to explore local records offices.

Staff at North East Wales Archives on Clwyd Street, Ruthin, say it could have been much worse

Ruthin was severely affected by the floods made worse by Storm Christoph throughout last Wednesday (January 20). The North East Wales Archives for Denbighshire, situated on Clwyd Street, was among several buildings affected in the town. The archives, only set up in April 2020, has recently been closed due to the Covid-19 lockdown. It also has a site in Hawarden, which collects Flintshire records. Staff in Ruthin say they were relieved to find that their collections managed to remain untouched during the floods, despite damage done to the basement. A statement posted on their Facebook page read: Ruthin experienced some awful flooding on Wednesday night and with the gaol being situated right next to the river the staff were very worried about what they’d find the following morning.

Female-led stories from Flintshire and Denbighshire s past come to the screen as part of Theatr Clwyd project

INSPIRING female stories from the archives have leapt from paper to screen as part of a grant funded project with Theatr Clwyd. North East Wales Archives, which covers both Denbighshire and Flintshire archives, has been awarded a Welsh Government grant to work alongside Theatr Clwyd to create monologue style films which will re-tell rousing stories of strong and inspirational women during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The stories are based around real women discovered in the archive collections held at Ruthin and Hawarden. The spotlight will be on four lives including: • A headmistress who devoted herself to education; • A widow of miner killed in the Gresford colliery disaster;
