MLB trade rumors: Joey Gallo was scratched roughly ten minutes before Wednesday Texas Rangers game, as the San Diego Padres and the New York Yankees reportedly continue to pursue Gallo in advance of Friday’s trade deadline. Levi Weaver says Gallo is heading to the New York Yankees.
This is obviously a developing situation and nothing happens until it happens, but it appears that the trigger has been pulled. The Rangers homegrown star, who pleaded publicly, repeatedly, to stay with the Rangers, apparently is being shipped out.
I am not going to try to speculate as to who Texas may be getting, but whatever the deal is, I’m not going to like it because it will still mean Joey Gallo is no longer a Texas Ranger.
Yankees Reportedly Finalizing Deal To Acquire Joey Gallo, Joely Rodriguez
Glenn Otto in return. (Initial reports had suggested outfielder
Randy Vasquez might also be involved, but the expectation is now that those two players will remain with New York).
It’s a bold strike for the Yankees, who have hovered a bit above .500 for much of the season. New York entered play tonight 8.5 games back of the Red Sox in the American League East and three behind the Athletics for the final Wild Card spot (with the Mariners also ahead of them in the standings). That the Yankees aren’t leading the division as many anticipated they would coming into the year is largely a reflection of a lineup that has been more decent than great over the course of the season. The front office is looking to remedy that by adding another of the game’s most prodigious power bats to an order that already includes
There s been a hole in the Bombers outfield ever since center fielder Aaron Hicks went down with a season-ending wrist injury. That paved the way for Brett Gardner to get plenty of playing time in his age-37 season, rather than providing depth as this team s fourth outfielder.
Now, manager Aaron Boone has an All-Star caliber outfielder to pencil into the lineup day in and day out.
Gallo, 27, is hitting .223 (69-for-310) through 95 games this season in Texas, clubbing 25 home runs and driving in 55 runs. He s a two-time All-Star (making the team this year), a slugger who s blasted 40-plus homers in two single seasons and a Gold Glove Award winner for his defense in 2020.
One of the biggest rumored pieces of the trade market is on the move. Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo was scratched tonight just before game-time, and the expectation is that it’s trade related.
Gallo was scratched for non-medical reasons. It appears a trade is going down.
There were a lot of Padres-adjacent rumors earlier today (trying to do a big Eric Hosmer/money/prospect deal), so we’ll see if it’s a huge one like that.
Updates coming …
WOW. It’s the Yankees. I didn’t think they’d do it. And I’m dying thinking about Gallo being together with Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge. My lord.
