Why you should skip seeing Hyperion, the tallest tree in the world

Why you should skip seeing Hyperion, the tallest tree in the world FacebookTwitterEmail Glance to the south from the Redwood Creek Overlook and know that Hyperion is somewhere out there.Ashley Harrell “Here it is. That’s it,” my guide says about the world’s tallest tree. You would think that a towering 380-foot coast redwood named Hyperion would need no introduction, but here’s the thing: the tree perches in a dense, primordial forest deep within Redwood National Park. There are soaring redwoods all around it, so it’s impossible to tell from the ground which tree is the tallest.

Steelhead Season Yet to Take Off

Arcata resident Elijah Goode landed a nice hatchery steelhead on Sunday while fishing the Mad River. The transition to steelhead season is taking a bit longer than we had hoped. To date, steelhead fishing has yet to really take off on popular rivers like the Smith and Chetco. The lower Eel also has yet to see big numbers of steelhead. The lone bright spot has been the Mad River. It s probably a safe bet that more steelhead have been caught on the Mad than all of the other local rivers combined. There s been a good mix of wild and hatchery adults, and the river is full of half-pounders. With another round of rain predicted for Friday, all of the coastal rivers should get another good rise. And with each rise comes the possibility of more ocean-bright steelhead. And that s all we can ask for.

Circling the Mountain

camera icon COURTESY OF GORDON BALL He would later explain his motivation for pioneering the ritual walk: “I felt it was time to take not just another hike on Mt. Tam, the guardian peak for the Bay and for the City as I had done so many times but to do it with the intent of circling it, going over it, and doing it with the formality and respect I had seen mountain walks given in Asia.” Starting at Redwood Creek in Muir Woods, the three Beat poets walked clockwise around the mountain, stopping to chant at 10 “stations” notable spots along the route that were selected spontaneously for what the poets considered their special power before closing the loop back at the creek.
