East Grand Forks working to retrofit Civic Center s ice system

East Grand Forks officials' plans to renovate two of the city's ice arenas are still on a distant horizon. While they work toward that, city staff plan to use grants, prize money and, perhaps, "leftover" sales tax revenue to pay for a small chunk of those renovations beforehand.

By Doug Barrett May 26, 2021 | 8:24 AM East Grand Forks may enlist the services of a construction management firm to help fine-tune cost estimates on potential park improvements – including the aging ice arenas. East Grand Forks hired JLG Architects in 2019 to conduct a comprehensive building review of the Civic Center and VFW Memorial Arenas.  The repairs and renovations could range from $13-$20 million dollars. Park and Rec Superintendent Reid Huttunen says Construction Engineers would be hired at a cost of $22,500 dollars to help detail the project bidding and construction schedule. Council member Dale Helms questioned the need for hiring another consultant before voters decide whether to support a sales tax to finance the project.  Mayor Steve Gander says additional cost estimates will help in the decision making process.
