EGF looking to hire CM firm for park plans

By Doug Barrett May 26, 2021 | 8:24 AM East Grand Forks may enlist the services of a construction management firm to help fine-tune cost estimates on potential park improvements – including the aging ice arenas. East Grand Forks hired JLG Architects in 2019 to conduct a comprehensive building review of the Civic Center and VFW Memorial Arenas.  The repairs and renovations could range from $13-$20 million dollars. Park and Rec Superintendent Reid Huttunen says Construction Engineers would be hired at a cost of $22,500 dollars to help detail the project bidding and construction schedule. Council member Dale Helms questioned the need for hiring another consultant before voters decide whether to support a sales tax to finance the project.  Mayor Steve Gander says additional cost estimates will help in the decision making process.

Mayoral veto stymies East Grand Forks roundabout

Mayoral veto stymies East Grand Forks roundabout East Grand Forks City Council members voted to keep a planned roundabout in the city s long-term transit plans, which kept the project in line for $860,000 worth of federal subtarget funding in 2022. Mayor Steve Gander vetoed that vote last week, and council members failed to override his veto on Tuesday. The roundabout is still in the transit plan and still in line for the federal funding, but, in City Administrator David Murphy s estimation, the failed veto override leaves the city with two options: rush to put a new project in the roundabout s place in time for the 2022 funding, or see if one of three other northwest Minnesota cities in the same program would take East Grand Forks spot in a four-year rotation, which would buy the city time to revisit its decision once again.
