Former UFC champ BJ Penn arrested on suspicion of DUI

UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn has been arrested again in Hawaii. Penn, 42, was arrested on Jan. 23 under suspicion of Driving Under the Influence. Police were alerted to Penn by a reckless driver complaint, according to Hawaii County Police spokesperson Denise Laitinen. Laitinen said he was released pending an investigation and provided no further details of the incident. News of Penn’s latest run-in with the law surfaced via a video posted to Reddit. The video shows Penn in restraints being loaded into a police vehicle, all the while shouting and cursing. BJ Penn clearly drunk as he’s arrested. The UFC’s three-event, eight-day stint in its return to Abu Dhabi culminated in Saturday night’s UFC 257. It featured the return of former dual-division champion Conor McGregor, as he faced form interim UFC lightweight champion Dustin Poirier in a rematch of their 2014 bout. McGregor won their first meeting in one minute and 46 seconds by technical knockout. He didn’t better that mark in the rematch. In fact, it was Poirier that gave McGregor a brutal welcome back to the Octagon after a year on the sidelines. Conor McGregor returns to the Octagon on Saturday following a year on the sidelines. He’ll face Dustin Poirier in a main event rematch. But first, watch as McGregor and Poirier stare each other down during the first UFC 257 face-offs. McGregor hasn’t set foot in the cage since his 40-second knockout of Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at UFC 246 in January of 2020. Frustrations with UFC officials and the pandemic led him to announce his retirement in June. He walked that back recently to ink the fight with Poirier. Poirier, however, hasn’t been much more active than McGregor during that stretch. He defeated Dan Hooker in June of 2020, but prior to that hadn’t fought since losing to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in October of 2019.
