Emmet County Votes to Cut Jaws of Life Funding for Three Fire Departments

9 & 10 News April 22, 2021 Every year, Emmet county gives the fire departments in their area $4,500 to purchase, repair and train using their jaws of life tools. Each department is expected to submit a report by Dec. 31 on how they spent the money, and most do, but those in Mackinaw City, Alanson, and Harbor Springs failed to do so by the deadline. The county decided Thursday cut next year’s allowance in half. “I don’t think we’re being unfair here,” said Mike Reaves, Emmet County administrator. “These are minimal standards and rules that we have to explain to our auditors where that money goes. Who used it and what was it purposed for, and do we have receipts for what you gave the county money for?”

Northern Michigan Airports Receive Federal Funding for Improvements

9 & 10 News April 8, 2021 Throughout the pandemic airports across the country lost revenue thanks to less travel, and the U.S. government is looking to provide assistance.  The U.S. Department of Transportation will give over $4 million to three northern Michigan airports. Cherry Capital Airport will receive $2,369,965, Pellston Regional Airports will receive $1,009,869, and Chippewa County Airport will receive $1,008,286. These funds will help them make improvements related to operations, cleaning, and fighting the spread of pathogens.   In Pellston, the airport lost revenue due to COVID, and this money will give them a helping hand. “Ok, so we weathered the storm for 2020 but what does 2021 and the future look like?” said Mike Reaves, Emmet County Administrator. “So these grants will help us planning going forward, because we’re not out of this yet and I’m still impacted by significant revenue downturns.”

Emmet County, EGLE continue work on longterm PFAS response William T. Perkins, wtperkins@petoskeynews.com PELLSTON Officials say they believe they’re getting closer to the next phase of groundwater contamination testing at Pellston Regional Airport, which seeks to map the specific depth and area where chemicals have infiltrated beneath the ground. Those efforts should mark a significant step in helping experts understand the level of danger to Pellston residents and necessary strategies to mitigate the problem. At the same time, they won’t have all the information they need by the end of this year. Limited by time and finances, officials from Emmet County and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy both said the current goal is to prioritize what work is most important now, and what will have to wait until next year.
