PELLSTON Officials say they believe they’re getting closer to the next phase of groundwater contamination testing at Pellston Regional Airport, which seeks to map the specific depth and area where chemicals have infiltrated beneath the ground.
Those efforts should mark a significant step in helping experts understand the level of danger to Pellston residents and necessary strategies to mitigate the problem. At the same time, they won’t have all the information they need by the end of this year. Limited by time and finances, officials from Emmet County and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy both said the current goal is to prioritize what work is most important now, and what will have to wait until next year.
