When you watched DJ Byron, former Don of West Las Vegas High School, this season on the basketball court, it was pretty apparent that he would be playing at the next level. The former Dons guard averaged 27 points per game in the 11-game 2021 season, tops in district 2-3A and according to MaxPreps.com, fourth in the state of New Mexico. Byron will now get a chance to take his talents to the next level, as he signed his letter of intent to attend and play for New Mexico Highlands University next season; the second Don in program history to do so, joining DJ Bustos.

As she watched a broadcast of the verdict in the murder trial of the police officer charged with killing George Floyd with her last-period class, middle school teacher Diana Garcia-Allen did her best to stifle her own emotions and keep from crying. She sensed a sadness mirrored in her students.
“I don’t think until that moment they felt the weight of it,” she said.
The guilty verdicts were welcomed by her students in Fort Worth, Texas all Hispanic with one Black student but they had a range of viewpoints. Some were relieved because violent protests might have broken out otherwise. One boy said he didn’t see why former police officer Derek Chauvin should serve a lengthy prison sentence, prompting a groan from classmates.
Teachers have had to navigate addressing race in U.S classrooms in unprecedented ways since George Floyd’s death. For some, watching and discussing the trial of Derek Chauvin in class was the culmination of nearly a year’s work.
