Struggling A s Lose Trevor Rosenthal to Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

April 12, 2021 After pitching his way back from the outskirts of oblivion last year, Trevor Rosenthal fared relatively well via free agency, landing a one-year, $11 million deal from the A’s. Unfortunately, he has yet to take the mound for the team, and now it appears that it could be awhile before he does, even in a best-case scenario. On Thursday, Rosenthal underwent surgery to alleviate thoracic outlet syndrome, a loss that hardly helps an A’s pitching staff that’s off to a rough start this season. The 30-year-old Rosenthal spent 2020 with the Royals and Padres, notching 11 saves while tossing 23.2 innings with a 1.90 ERA and 2.22 FIP; both his 41.8% strikeout rate and 33.0% strikeout-walk differential ranked sixth in the majors among relievers with at least 20 innings. He made an impressive rebound from a rough 2 1/2-year stretch that began with late-2017 Tommy John surgery that cost him the last quarter of that season and all of ’18; when he returned, he struggled gre

Oakland A s injuries: Mitch Moreland hamstring, A J Puk and Chad Pinder updates

The Oakland A’s have already overcome a few minor injuries early in the 2021 season, as Sean Murphy, Ramon Laureano, and Matt Olson each missed a few games but are now back in the lineup and playing well. However, another hitter is now taking a brief turn on the bench. DH Mitch Moreland was out of the lineup Friday due to “a little hamstring issue,” reports Shayna Rubin of the Mercury News. The lefty was available to pinch-hit if needed, but was not called to do so. He also did not play on Saturday, and the team is off Sunday, so he’ll get three straight days off.

Bullpen Report: April 8, 2021 | RotoGraphs Fantasy Baseball

Karinchak entered Wednesday’s game in the bottom of the seventh, replacing staff ace Shane Bieber with two runners on, one out, and a 2-1 lead over the Royals. That’s about as high-leverage as it gets, although not where you’d expect the “closer” to pitch. After Karinchak allowed a game-tying single, Emmanuel Clase pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Again, not really when the “closer” would pitch, but the 23-year-old was terrific. He struck out two of the three hitters he faced on sliders after he had mixed in a few 101 MPH cutters. Once Cleveland took the lead in the bottom of the eighth, it became a save situation. Wittgren got the call and quickly sat the Royals down in order to secure his first save.
