Last Man Standing: Revisiting the Biggie & Tupac crime scene

John Harvey s Debut EP

Second Chances is a breezy collection of folk-pop tunes that tackle the complexities of love and relationships John Harvey has lived in Central Oregon for 10 years and has been playing music longer than that. Even with his years of being in bands (The Django Band duo, Jupiter and Teardrop) and knowing his way around an instrument or two, there are still things Harvey wants to accomplish. One was to release a solo project which as of this past Friday, can now officially be crossed off the list. Titled Second Chances, Harvey s debut EP holds five songs that hit the ears with moments of indie pop, folk and alt-country, making for a warm blend of genres. Even with a variety of tempos cast throughout the project, the overall vibe of the EP feels sunny even on tracks like Someday, where Harvey slows things down and sings from the perspective of someone lost in a love daze. The cover even showcases some of last year s sunflowers out at Harvey s house; a perfect touch.

Closing Time – Planet S

Friday 12 VOD and theatres A lot of movies riff on Leonard Cohen but they’re rarely as interesting as the Godfather of Gloom’s work. On one side, you have Sarah Polley’s Take this Waltz, a romantic drama set to and enhanced by Cohen’s music. On the opposite corner you have self-serving documentaries like Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love in which director Nick Broomfield manages to make their epic story all about himself. Death of a Ladies’ Man is at least its own beast. This mildly compelling character piece with surrealistic overtones revolves around a Leonard Cohen-like character, Samuel O’Shea (Gabriel Byrne). A poetry teacher who’s a bit of a cad and a full-blown alcoholic, O’Shea is going through a rough patch: his second wife has left him, his job doesn’t fulfill him and, perhaps more pressingly, he’s hallucinating and not in the fun way.
