MVA on backfoot, BJP on the offensive after SC quashes law granting reservation to Marathas
Mumbai: The Maha Vikas Aghadi governmentâs cup of woes runneth over. Engrossed as it is in the thick of the pandemic struggle, now a political challenge has been poured in, with the Supreme Court striking down reservation for the Maratha community in education and government jobs on Wednesday. Now the government faces a major political challenge â that of keeping the politically influential Maratha community, which constitutes about 32 per cent of the population, in good humour.
The M.G. Gaikwad commission report submitted in 2018 concluded that the community had lost its self-esteem, which could be remedied by giving them reservation under the Socially and Economically Backward Classes category.
State must ensure backward class commission report is translated into English: BJP MP Sambhaji Raje
Sambhaji Raje, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Rajya Sabha MP from Kolhapur, and supporters of the Maratha Kranti Morcha on Saturday demanded the Maha Vikas Aghadi government to translate the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission’s report into English.
The commission had recommended providing 12% reservation in education and 13% in government jobs for members of the Maratha community. Last year, the Supreme Court had ordered an interim stay on the Maratha reservation law.
The Supreme Court is set to hear pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the Maratha quota law under the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes Act, 2018, from March 8 to 18.
