A team of eight officials from the police, the District Child Protection Unit, the Child Welfare Committee and the Pre University Department, on Monday visited Expert Pre University College in Valachil in view of complaints from parents about their children being held back in the institution’s hostel.
Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar told reporters here on Tuesday that the visit came after calls were made to him and other officials by parents accusing the college management of not allowing them to meet their children staying in the hostel and also not allowing them to speak with their children. The parents also said that their children were living under tremendous stress in the hostel.

The Mangaluru Rural Police on Thursday registered a case against the management of Expert Pre University College, Valachil, under the Karnataka Epidemic Diseases Act on the charge of holding classes and other academic activities on campus.
The college has also been accused of being responsible for some parents holding a protest outside its campus during the lockdown on Thursday for not sending students back home.
But the college has denied both the charge.
More than 30 parents from Dharwad, Vijayapura, Tarikere and other parts of the State came to the institution on Thursday morning asking the management to send their children back home along with them.

The police have taken into custody Akash Bhavan Sharan, said to be an associate of underworld operative Vikki Shetty, in connection with two motor vehicle theft cases and a plan to murder two associates of another such operative Ravi Poojary.
Talking to reporters here on Friday, Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar said that nine associates of Sharan were arrested in connection with the theft of two motorcycles in Kankanady and Mangaluru Rural Police limits earlier. Sharan, who was lodged in the Central Prison in Bengaluru, is said to have hatched a plan to use these vehicles to murder Pradeep Mendon, Vijay Manki Stand and Kodikere Manoj.
