Pathways broke ground last week on a 12-bed inpatient center adjacent to its existing campus at 305 Carpenter Road in Fort Collins that will serve hospice patients with the most acute end-of-life needs.
The $8 million center will replace the six beds at McKee Medical Center that Pathways currently leases for hospice patients. That lease expires at the end of the year, although Pathways has requested an extension until its new facility opens in about a year. The six beds at McKee have been increasingly inadequate, said Pathways President Nate Lamkin. They were full one out of every four days last year and patients had to queue up in area hospitals waiting for a bed. Every year, we have dozens of patients who pass away while waiting for a bed to open up, he said.
