Cape Town - The UCT community, including the alumni, have urged researchers around the world who have photocopies or images of documents destroyed in the Jagger Library fire to contribute those to help recover some of the lost records.
Dr Maha Rafi Atal, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Copenhagen Business School in Frederiksberg, Denmark, took an initiative to establish a registry of copies of materials that researchers have among their research collections.
Atal, who is collecting the information online, said in light of the fire at UCT on Sunday, academics and other researchers around the world who have worked in those special collections and have taken photocopies or mobile phone images of documents may be able to contribute those to help recover some of the lost records.

Cape Town fire danger ânot entirely over just yet

Cape Town - Despite the wildfire that broke out on the slopes of Table Mountain on Sunday morning having been largely contained, the danger has not entirely passed.
Anton Bredell, the local government MEC for Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the Western Cape, warned that the danger was not entirely over just yet.
He said that overnight the wind dropped significantly, allowing helicopters to water-bomb the fire lines from early in the morning.
âOur first priority remains fully extinguishing all of the fire lines. Then, over the next few days, firefighters will continue to dampen down the affected areas and monitor for flare-ups until we are 100% sure the fire is out.
Cape Town fire latest: Residents can return home as damage is assessed
The impact of the devastating Cape Town fires is currently being assessed, with damage to several buildings and infrastructure reported.
With the Cape Town fire now declared under control, the time has come for the City and residents affected by the devastating blaze to assess the significant damage incurred over the past three days.
Evacuated residents and students from the University of Cape Town (UCT) are now being urged to begin returning to their homes and residences (the latter of which under the guidance of the university) and assessments have begun to determine the extent of the damage to infrastructure around the affected areas.
