Since 1963, spring in the small town of Mountain View has been in ushered by not only the blooming of wildflowers and dogwoods, but also by the  Arkansas Folk Festival. It is a festival that marks the return of impromptu musical gatherings, or pickin’, on the Courthouse Square, and a time when craftsmen display their winter’s work. The dates for the 57th Arkansas Folk Festival are April 19-20, 2019 and, as always, admission is free. Connie Bilyeu, beloved Springfield music teacher, remembered as a mentor, friend Claudette Riley, Springfield News-Leader © Submitted photo Connie Bilyeu Tributes filled social media Monday following the death of a beloved Springfield music teacher and the revered matriarch of a musically gifted Ozarks family. Consuelo Lane Bilyeu, known to friends and family as Connie, was 78. She died shortly before 2 a.m. Monday of complications from COVID-19. Bilyeu, a gifted singer, grew up performing in church and with the gospel group called the Waymakers. She taught vocal music for more than 30 years in Springfield, starting at Pipkin Middle School. She taught at Central High School through the 1970s, moving to Kickapoo High School in 1980.
