Palmer St fire victim counts her blessings
Debbie Barber with a picture of her children and grandchildren – one of the few items she managed to rescue from her burned-out home.
Warkworth resident Debbie Barber “thanks her lucky stars” that the fire that engulfed her home earlier this month did not happen when she was alone there at night.
The Palmer Street house suffered major fire damage to the lounge and kitchen and the roof partially collapsed during the blaze, which occurred late in the afternoon on May 3. The rest of the house suffered extensive smoke damage.
Debbie was at work when the fire broke out and was phoned by a neighbour who said that she should come home – though the neighbour did not say what the problem was.

Mackay residents will not need to travel far for their interior design and backyard maintenance products, with a new local business recently opening.
House of Lavender opened its doors last week, with the family-run business offering solutions and services for both indoors and outdoors.
Owner Renee Lavender said the business was inspired by a lack of the particular service in the area.

“We tried to get these ceramic pots for our house, and we couldn’t find them anywhere locally.
Cornwall Borough Council agreed to help the Community Fire Company of Cornwall Borough to purchase a used $500,000 aerial truck.
The 2012 Pierce aerial truck will replace the fire company s 1997 E-One (Emergency One) aerial ladder truck. Tobyhanna Township Volunteer Fire Company is purchasing a new truck and selling its vehicle - with 11,000 miles on it.
Council President John Karinch said the council s finance committee learned that parts were no longer available to make repairs to the ladder and the pump on the E-One truck, according to a repair facility that specializes in fire equipment. He said the fire company has $95,000 to use for a down payment on the used Pierce truck and is willing to apply for a $200,000 loan from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, leaving a balance due of $205,000.
