Escondido police will soon have a powerful new tool to keep watch over large public gatherings, from concerts and festivals to crowded mall parking lots during the holidays.
Thanks to a $258,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, administered by the city of San Diego’s Office of Emergency Services, Escondido will purchase a new SkyWatch mobile observation tower, allowing officers to monitor crowds from a perch more than two stories high.
The city council approved the purchase at a recent meeting. The new tower, which the city hopes to acquire by the upcoming holiday season, will replace the department’s existing tower, which is at the end of its usable life and lacks equipment such as video cameras that will be included with the new model, said Lisa Rodelo, business manager with the Escondido Police Department.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security will provide an additional $25 million in grants to state and local cybersecurity preparedness programs with a particular focus on combatting ransomware, Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced Thursday.
Mayorkas also announced that DHS is considering funding additional grants to be managed by the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to support state and local authorities battling ransomware. And he said DHS would implement a series of cybersecurity sprints to mobilize action in priority areas. As we have seen in recent events, attacks on our cyber networks can have devastating effects, Mayorkas said.
