As restaurants face a hiring shortage, owners are making changes to bring potential employees in the door. Kurt Huffman owns Chef's Table and manages restaurants across Portland. He raised hourly wages just in the last three weeks. With tip sharing, back-of-house staff members are now making about $22 an hour. Still, Huffman said it's not enough for a sizeable hiring boost. In some locations, Nate Tilden s team is working as a skeleton crew. At others, owners are in the kitchen. We were able to shuffle people around and find ways to keep them employed but also with this back and forth, I’ve not rehired people or reopened businesses because I don’t want to have people come off unemployment just to have to go back on, Tilden said.
KATU brought these concerns to Oregon s state employment economist.
“There are so many things going on in Oregon’s labor market right now. We’ve seen that heading into the pandemic one out of six workers in Oregon’s labor market was a parent with children present in the home, Gail Krumenauer said.
