COLUMBIA, S.C. The South Carolina Technical College System and Newberry College have entered a partnership agreement to help meet the growing demand for respiratory care professionals.
Students pursuing respiratory therapy degrees from any of the state s 16 technical colleges can easily transition to online courses offered by Newberry College in order to complete a bachelor s degree.
While normally treating those with breathing-related health conditions such as asthma, pneumonia and COPD, respiratory therapists have been in high demand during the coronavirus pandemic aiding doctors and nurses with patients who have been placed on ventilators, monitoring breathing operation.

Olivia Quiroga of Berkeley Heights, a senior at Mount Saint Mary Academy in Watchung, has received a full scholarship from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Dana Goad, Quiroga s school counselor, said, “The Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship, selecting applicants who can bring both intellectual and community leadership to the entire campus community. Approximately 1 percent of freshman applicants are offered the scholarship. Selected applicants have achieved stellar academic records as well as impressive extracurricular activities and essays.”
Goad said, “Olivia is an incredibly well-rounded, intelligent, and thoughtful young woman. She has worked hard for phenomenal academic success and is highly active in numerous extracurricular activities. Today, we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the handshake of Youngstown native George Shuba with Jackie Robinson, a defining moment in civil rights and a consequential addition to Mahoning Valley history.
Rookie first basemen Jackie Robinson debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers’ minor league affiliate Montreal Royals. He hit a three-run home run, and as he crossed home plate, Shuba instinctively raised his hand to congratulate him. The iconic scene will be captured in a statue of Shuba and Robinson in downtown Youngstown, to be dedicated in late summer.
