When you think of sailing heroes you automatically think of those skippers who achieved ‘firsts’.
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Dame Ellen MacArthur, Sir Francis Chichester, Dame Naomi James and Bernard Moitessier, to name just a few, would all feature on such a list.
But I decided to focus on the sailors who are actively cruising, and whose writing and vlogging over the last two decades have quietly inspired sailors to plan and set sail on their own adventures, even if it was only for a short cruise from their home port or harbour.

A young woman with cerebral palsy has become the first person to cross the Atlantic by ‘sip and puff’ sailing.
Natasha Lambert who three years ago sailed into Dun Laoghaire to complete a crossing of the Irish Sea by the same means controls the helm and sails of her vessel with a straw.
As Yachting Monthly reports, Natasha’s father Gary designed the system that drives her Nautitech Open 46, named Blown Away which also happens to be the largest vessel ever adapted for sip and puff sailing.

An Isle of Wight sailor, who uses her breath to sail her boat, has completed her challenge to cross the Atlantic this morning (Friday).
Natasha Lambert is the first and youngest female quadriplegic skipper to cross the Atlantic using the only boat to be adapted to use the sip puff technology developed for this purpose.
She crossed the finish line at 10:39 hrs after 18 days, 21 hours and 39 min sailing, and covering 2808 Nm.

Natasha Lambert, 23, has become the first person to sail across the Atlantic using just sip and puff technology to control her boat.
The skipper, who has quadriplegic athetoid cerebral palsy which affects her limbs and speech, left from Gran Canaria with her crew as part of the 2020 Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) fleet.
