Approval of the investment by Searchlight Capital Partners by the state Public Service Commission was conditioned on Consolidated expanding its upstate New York footprint by at least 300 customers in unserved areas. Union representatives said Wednesday in a news release that the labor contracts of more than 1,000 workers in Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire expire Aug. 7, and that negotiations over new contracts have been underway since March with no resolution in sight. While there are no immediate plans for a work stoppage, representatives of the Communications Workers of America Local 1400 and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Locals 2320, 2326 and 2327 voted by an “overwhelming majority” to authorize a strike if necessary, according to the release.

The contracts of more than 1,000 union employees of Consolidated Communications in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont expire on Aug. 7. Representatives for Communications Workers of America said an “overwhelming majority” of union members voted to authorize the strike. The union said it is concerned about the company’s desire to use outside contractors and move work outside of the northern New England area. It said it would be a burden for residents of northern New England if the company hires out-of-state workers to maintain communication networks.
