DePaul appoints Sherri Sidler as executive vice president

The DePaulia Rebecca Meluch, News Editor|May 14, 2021 DePaul’s Board of Trustees has appointed Sherri Sidler as executive vice president, according to a press release. The appointment comes the same day as the board elected Salma Ghanem as university provost.  Sidler was previously  a member of the university’s financial team, , serving as the interim executive vice president since Jan. 1.  “Sherri is a respected leader and natural collaborator. Her wise counsel these past several months has been invaluable,” DePaul President A. Gabriel Esteban said. “After conducting a national search, it is clear Sherri’s extensive experience and deep knowledge of our university make her well equipped to lead DePaul’s financial and daily operations in support of our Catholic, Vincentian and urban mission.” 

DePaul trustees appoint Salma Ghanem as provost

The DePaulia Sonal Soni, Assistant News Editor|May 12, 2021 On May 7, DePaul’s Board of Trustees voted to appoint Salma Ghanem as provost, according to a press release. Ghanem was a professor and dean for the College of Communication and took the role as acting provost in 2018 before assuming the interim provost role in 2019.  “Throughout Salma’s time at DePaul, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to fulfilling our mission as a Catholic, Vincentian and urban university,” DePaul President A. Gabriel Esteban said in the release. “I am especially grateful for the wisdom and stability she provided during this past year, as we navigated countless challenges caused by the global pandemic. I look forward to our continued partnership.”

College of Communication Diversity Advisor addresses DEI action plan criticisms

The DePaulia Sonal Soni, Assistant News Editor|May 9, 2021 The College of Communication’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) task force conducted a yearlong research report in 2018-2019 interviewing students, faculty and staff to identify areas for potential improvement. Based on the project’s findings, the college developed an action plan in September 2020 to address practices and policies throughout the college. Despite the college’s stated commitment to dismantling racism, numerous community members have condemned DePaul’s communication department for discrimination. The College of Communication’s current action plan includes short and long-term goals that will be modified as needed, according to the College of Communication website. The plan aims to meet the needs of communication members by offering a supportive, diverse and inclusive environment.
