TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WWSB) - Florida Senate Democrats voted Wednesday to oust Minority Leader Gary Farmer with just days left in the legislative session, deciding to replace him with Sen. Lauren Book, D-Plantation.
Less than six months after Farmer, D-Lighthouse Point formally took the leadership post in November, Democratic senators cast a unanimous vote of no confidence.
Wednesday’s ouster came after years of tension between Farmer and Book, who was chosen last week to lead Senate Democrats following the November 2022 elections. Instead, she was tapped to assume the leadership position more than a year ahead of schedule.
More than three weeks after the death of Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL20)and Democrats are calling on Gov. Ron DeSantis to announce a date for a special election to fill the seat.
“Our governor needs to call the special election,” Congresswoman Lois Frankel (D-West Palm Beach) told CBS12 News. “Gov. DeSantis, stop playing politics. Set this election.”
Democrats have accused the governor of holding off on calling a special election in order to deprive Democrats in Congress an extra vote in the House.
Florida law requires that DeSantis call a special election to fill the vacant congressional seat, but does not specify a deadline.

TALLAHASSEE - With two days left to reach agreement with the Senate, the Republican-controlled Florida House on Wednesday approved a major elections package that includes placing additional restrictions on voting by mail.
The attempt to change election laws is one of the most-controversial issues of the 2021 legislative session, which will end Friday. Republicans contend changes are needed to ensure election security, while Democrats say the proposals are a partisan power grab. Why can’t we just let the people vote? Rep. Dotie Joseph, D-North Miami, asked at one point during a lengthy, sometime-heated debate Wednesday.
