SHETLAND Islands Council (SIC) is hopeful that the practice of oil-laden tankers loitering off the coast after leaving Sullom Voe Terminal will be resolved in the near future, a meeting of the local authorityâs harbour board heard on Wednesday.
Infrastructure director John Smith said the best way forward to ultimately solve the issue is a âcollaborativeâ approach involving the industry.

He said the council has previously made direct contact at âvarying levelsâ regarding vessels lying close to shore south of Lerwick in what is a deemed a precautionary area.
âI think we are expecting this to be resolved satisfactorily quite quickly,â Smith added.

COUNCILLORS have received assurances over how Shetlandâs children are being taught remotely under the current coronavirus restrictions – with partnership working seen as a key component.
At a meeting of Shetland Islands Councilâs education and families committee on Tuesday morning, elected members raised a number of questions and concerns on how the islesâ bairns have been taught since national restrictions were imposed for the start of term.

The majority of Shetland pupils are receiving remote learning at home, with only children of key workers and vulnerable bairns being taught in person in school or receiving early learning childcare.

A NEW plan detailing Shetland Islands Councilâs ambition for the next five years has been approved.
It covers a range of areas including long-standing issues like managing the population and employment, as well as more current topics such as Covid-19, Brexit and climate change.
Council leader Steven Coutts said the actions in the plan set out how Shetland can âremain positive, confident and create a sustainable futureâ.

The plan was discussed for around one hour at Wednesdayâs meeting of the full council, with elected members on the whole pleased to see it on the agenda.
