The Senate will be briefed properly on the worsening security situation in the country that appears to threaten the nation’s corporate existence. Disclosing this yesterday in Abuja, President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, said that the appearance by the Service Chiefs is in response to a resolution by the Senate last week Tuesday, wherein it was resolved that the Service Chiefs and other Heads of Security Agencies be invited against the backdrop of heightening insecurity across states of the federation.

By Naomi Sharang Abuja, April 27, 2021 The Senate on Tuesday sought the establishment of a permanent military and police command base in the area adjoining Shiroro and Rafi Local Government areas of Niger state, to tackle escalating insecurity in the state. The resolution was sequel to a Point of Order raised by Sen. Sani Musa (APC-Niger) at plenary. The upper chamber also urged the Chief of Army Staff and the Inspector-General of Police to redesign the mode of operations of the military in the affected areas, so as to curtail escalating insecurity. The motion was titled “The activities of bandits and Boko Haram terrorists in Shiroro, Munya and Rafi Local Government Areas of Niger State: And the need to bring an end to the menace.”

Senate to meet Buhari on insecurity | Ripples Nigeria

The Senate on Tuesday asked its leadership to arrange a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on the nation’s security challenges. The upper legislative chamber took the decision after adopting a motion on the deadly activities of bandits and Boko Haram terrorists in some local government areas of Niger State and other parts of Nigeria sponsored by Senator Sani Mohammed Musa. The Senate also resolved to summon the Service Chiefs to brief the lawmakers on steps taken so far to address the worsening insecurity in the country. The lawmakers also mandated the Senate Joint Committees on Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security to engage the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, National Security Adviser, Babagana Munguno, Minister of Defence, Major Gen. Bashir Salihi Magashi (retd) and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, on the regional implications of the recent development in Chad.

Senate Observes a Minute Silence for Olowoporoku

By Deji Elumoye and Udora Orizu The Senate Wednesday, observed a minute silence in honour of Senator Bode Olowoporoku who died recently after a brief illness at the age of 76. This followed a point of order raised on his demise by former Senate Minority Leader, Senate Biodun Olujimi (PDP, Ekiti South). Coming under Order 43 of the Senate Standing Rules, Olujimi noted that Senator Olowoporoku, who was born in llawe-Ekiti, Ekiti State in 1945, was at the forefront in the agitation for the creation of Ekiti State. She said he provided extensive funding, and also played a prominent role working with the Council of Ekiti Obas and the committee for the creation of Ekiti State, adding that he utilized his robust network through his close friends Olusola Saraki and Adamu Ciroma to meet the late Head of State, Sani Abacha, for the creation of Ekiti State.
