KING COUNTY, Wash. Incumbent Dow Constantine is leading the primary race for King County executive after an initial ballot count Aug. 3.
Constantine has 54% of the vote.
Top challenger Joe Nguyen is trailing Constantine, but holding strong, with 30% of the vote.
Bill Hirt has 12% of the vote.
The top two primary candidates move on to the general election in November. I think if I were the executive with these numbers, I’d be a little concerned. He’s going to have to put the jets on and really work hard to get higher percentages, KING 5 Political analyst Ron Sims said.
State Sen. Joe Nguyen is challenging Constantine, who is seeking his fourth term.
Constantine hasn t faced a serious challenge since 2009 when he was first elected over former TV anchor Susan Hutchison.
Constantine is seeking his fourth term as county executive. If elected, he will be the longest-serving executive for King County since the current governance system was adopted in the 1960s.
Also on the ballot are Goodspaceguy, Johnathon Crines and Bill Hirt.
King County s Proposition 1
King County voters will decide whether to approve a property-tax levy this year that would renew funding support for programs and services that help children, youth and families in the county.

Constantine and Nickels didn’t get the plurality of West Seattle votes? That seems odd.

Those are the countywide percentages – not West Seattle votes – I just flagged how West Seattle resident candidates did in the overall final vote count. Have added a few words in hopes of making that clearer. The only geographic breakouts on the county website’s main section is overall turnout.

Linking this post to another post… One way Dow and our mayoral nominees can differentiate themselves – deal with the existing/pending commercial vacancy crisis across the county. Alaska/Fauntleroy corridor is a perfect example.

It s gonna be Joe v Dow. Courtesy of the Campaign
Today at 11:30 a.m. Washington state Senator Joe Nguyen will stand before a physically distant, masked-up crowd at Hing Hay Park and announce his plan to run for King County Executive, a seat Dow Constantine has held without too much trouble since the last recession tore through budgets 12 years ago.
Over the phone, Nguyen said he wants to dip from the Legislature because the pandemic exposed what so many in our communities already knew, which was that this was an inequitable system, and that for far too long we’ve had leaders that aren’t delivering for us.

SEATTLE State Sen. Joe Nguyen is running for King County executive.
It sets up an unusual challenge from the left of incumbent King County Executive Dow Constantine, who is seeking his fourth term. What we need right now are leaders who will fight with the fierce urgency to actually get these things done. We ve been tackling and talking about problems as it relates to inequities in our society, Nguyen said in an interview with KING 5 before his official announcement. It s time for us to act. What this pandemic has shown is that there is a need, and urgency for change in other ways within our society have been exacerbated.
