Joanna’s story
Joanna, 49, is a journalist, novelist and the author of the memoir My Salinger Year, which was recently turned into a film starring Sigourney Weaver. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with Keeril and children Coleman, 16, Pearl, 12, and Izzy, five.
I arrived at Oberlin College in Ohio in August 1990. I’d only been there a few hours when I walked out of my dormitory and spotted Keeril in the corridor, and instantly I was drawn to him. He stood out to me because he looked very normal, like the boys in my high school in New York. Ironically, I’d come to this arty, politically progressive college to get away from my middle-class, conventional life.

What: At the start of the 20th century, a group of well-off Russians gather in a Transylvanian country house to debate some of life’s big questions, with special reference to death, Jesus, and the ethics of violence. Streaming on MUBI.
Why watch: The Romanian filmmaker Cristi Puiu (
The Death of Mister Lazarescu) is playing some typically tricky games in this elegantly staged, outwardly faithful adaptation of a 1900 text by Russian philosopher Vladimir Solovyov. The characters rarely stop talking, but it’s up to us to decide how much of the real drama exists between the lines – and how much relevance Solovyov’s ideas retain in the present.
