The Congress on Thursday elected Debabrata Saikia as leader of the opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly and leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) for the second time. Three-time Nazira MLA Saikia was unanimously elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party, said Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora in a list submitted to the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Thursday. Samaguri MLA Rakibul Hussain has been chosen as the deputy leader of the party, while Wajed Ali Choudhury has been selected as the Chief Whip of the party. Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha has been inducted as the deputy chief whip of Congress and Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi has been chosen as the secretary of the Congress Legislature Party.

Guwahati, May 3 : The ruling BJP-led alliance, which returned to power in Assam for the second consecutive term, secured 11 seats less than the 2016 assembly polls. The Bharatiya Janata Party, the dominant partner of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), bagged 60 seats, similar to what it got five years ago. The NDA went on to finally win 75 seats in the 126 member assembly.
BJP s old ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won nine seats against 14 seats that it won last time while its new partner United People s Party Liberal (UPPL) won six seats as the Bodoland based party for the first time contested the assembly elections.
The ruling BJP-led NDA is leading on 33 seats, while the Grand Alliance led by the Congress is ahead on eight assembly constituencies, elections officials said on Sunday. According to the Election Commission s initial trends of the results, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is leading on 27 seats while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on six seats and United People s Party Liberal (UPPL) on six. The Congress has established initial leads only on five seats while its partners Bodoland Peoples Front on two seats and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on one seat. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and AGP chief and minister Atul Bora are leading from Majuli, Jalukbari and Bokakhat seats respectively.

Assam Election Result 2021: The AIUDF of Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi is leading in as many as 16 assembly constituencies where counting of votes is still underway. According to the Election Commission data, AIUDF has won 11 seats and is leading in 5 other seats.
The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) had contested the 2021 election is alliance with the Congress and other parties. The AIUDF had won a total of 13 seats in 2016 election when it fought the polls alone. In 2011 state polls, the AIUDF had won 18 seats – again contesting alone.
