The
93rd Academy Awards aired live on ABC on Sunday evening, rewarding the best achievements in cinema from the past year, and what a strange year it was. Although the coronavirus pandemic certainly made the year in film much less exciting, mostly because movie theaters were closed for a large chunk of it, there were still plenty of phenomenal films that deserved our attention. But which ones impressed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences the most?

Subscriber only A movie produced by Margot Robbie has claimed its first Oscar, with writer/director Emerald Fennell has winning Best Original Screenplay. The film, which was produced by Robbie s LuckyChap Entertainment, could also win Fennell Best Director. Fennell said she didn t prepare a speech because I didn t expect this to happen . He s very heavy and very cold, Fennell said of her Oscar. . I m trying very hard not to cry which is difficult as an English person because we don t cry ever. She also thanked LuckyChap Entertainment but didn t mention Robbie specifically.

The ceremony kicked off with Regina King walking into a small auditorium with a select audience of presenters and nominees. She pointed out that no one was wearing a mask, explaining that they were able to do it the same way it’s done on a film set, by following the same strict COVID-19 protocols and by wearing masks when the cameras were not rolling.
